When wingnuts collide: Todd Tiahrt and Jerry Moran in the Kansas republican U.S. Senate primary

by: Michael Bersin

There is a disadvantage to living in the Kansas City media market - you get the benefit of seeing all of the right wingnut republican campaign commercials on your idiot box. Todd Tiahrt (r) and Jerry Moran (r) are duking it out in the upcoming Kansas republican U.S. Senate primary:

[Todd Tiahrt]

Here in Kansas we're taught to stand up for what we believe.

[Endorsed by Tea Party Express & Sarah Palin]

Yet where my opponent and I stand  is very different. He votes to raise taxes and I will do everything I can to cut 'em. He votes to give terrorists constitutional rights. I believe terrorists deserve no rights. And where he saw promise in Pelosi taking over Washington, I saw nothing but trouble and said so.

I'm Todd Tiahrt, candidate for U.S. Senate and I approve this message. Because if you and I don't stand up, who will?

[approved by Todd Tiahrt
Paid for by Kansans for Tiahrt]

Where to start?

You mean this "Tea Party Express" and this Sarah Palin?

Now that's chutzpah.

Hmm. Constitution. Terrorists. Rights. You'd think someone would actually read the Constitution and about its history through the life of our nation. Who then gets to decide who is a terrorist and who is not subject to the processes of our Constitution and system of laws? Todd Tiahrt? Just asking.

So, should Timothy McVeigh have been executed without a trial and a presentation of evidence? Just asking.

Ex Parte Milligan, 71 U.S. 2 (1866)

...By the protection of the law human rights are secured; withdraw that protection, and they are at the mercy of wicked rulers, or the clamor of an excited people...

...The Constitution of the United States is a law for rulers and people, equally in war and in peace, and covers with the shield of its protection all classes of men, at all times, and under all circumstances. No doctrine, involving more pernicious consequences, was ever invented by the wit of man than that any of its provisions can be suspended during any of the great exigencies of government. Such a doctrine leads directly to anarchy or despotism, but the theory of necessity on which it is based is false; for the government, within the Constitution, has all the powers granted to it, which are necessary to preserve its existence...

[emphasis added]

All about the Constitution during a time of war no less.

...By the protection of the law human rights are secured...

...for the government, within the Constitution, has all the powers granted to it, which are necessary to preserve its existence...

Refudiate that.

Update: I just saw this commercial for Jerry Moran attempting to refudiate Todd Tiahrt's ad:

...but it's not like there's been a flood for Roy Blunt (r - lobbyists). Spotted today:

Unintentional irony?:

Nah, that would have to be a "Save the Gulf Coast" bumper sticker right next to it.

Jim Bunning (r) bunts into a triple play, sort of

Kentucky Senator Jim Bunning (r - obstruction) blinked:

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 2, 2010

Statement by President Obama on Signing of UI Extension Bill

"During these difficult economic times, supporting American workers, their families and our small businesses must be everyone's focus. The bill passed tonight by the Senate will extend access to health care benefits for workers who have lost their jobs, help small businesses get loans so they can grow and hire, and extend unemployment insurance benefits for millions of Americans who are looking for work. I'm grateful to the members of the Senate on both sides of the aisle who worked to end this roadblock to relief for America's working families."

##

We received the following statement from Senator Claire McCaskill's (D) office:

"The idea that someone would play politics with unemployment benefits while our country is facing ten percent unemployment is offensive," McCaskill said.  "This emergency extension was about keeping food on the table for thousands of unemployed families, yet Republicans were more concerned with holding things up in the Senate.  When Americans see this sort of thing happening in Congress, they have every right to be frustrated.  Frankly, I'm frustrated too."

Petulance appears to be a republican trait:

...Bunning's obstruction, however, continues on another front.

Democrats say he has put a hold on all pending presidential nominations, effectively blocking "several dozen" of President Obama's nomations...

Good luck Senator McCaskill.

PPP Missouri 2010 U.S. Senate poll: Robin Carnahan (D) leads

| More

by: Michael Bersin

Wed Jan 14, 2009 at 11:34:20 AM CST

Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan (D) at the Governor's Ham Breakfast at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia, August 14, 2008.

Public Policy Polling [pdf] released a poll with a sample of 867 Missouri voters taken on January 10th and 11th. The margin of error is 3.3%.

...Carnahan leads Congressman Roy Blunt 45-44, former Senator Jim Talent 47-43, and
former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman 47-36...

It's a good start.

I'm certain we'll soon start to see the campaign mechanisms gearing up. Think of all that money flowing into Missouri. The FEC campaign finance reports might get very interesting what with all those republicans cogitating on the prospect of running.

We don't need no stinkin' habeas corpus, do we Kit?

Evidently, almost 800 years of civilization doesn't mean squat to Kit Bond.

....No free man shall in future be arrested or imprisoned or disseised of his freehold, liberties or free customs, or outlawed or exiled or victimised in any other way, neither will we attack him or send anyone to attack him, except by the lawful judgement of his peers or by the law of the land. To no one will we sell, to no one will we refuse or delay right of justice...
