Teabaggers in Washington today: repeating an ugly part of our history

| More

We received the following statement from Congressman Emanuel Cleaver's (D-MO) office:

For many of the members of the CBC, like John Lewis and Emanuel Cleaver who worked in the civil rights movement, and for Mr. Frank who has struggled in the cause of equality, this is not the first time they have been spit on during turbulent times.

This afternoon, the Congressman was walking into the Capitol to vote, when one protester spat on him. The Congressman would like to thank the US Capitol Police officer who quickly escorted the others Members and him into the Capitol, and defused the tense situation with professionalism and care. After all the Members were safe, a full report was taken and the matter was handled by the US Capitol Police. The man who spat on the Congressman was arrested, but the Congressman has chosen not to press charges. He has left the matter with the Capitol Police.

This is not the first time the Congressman has been called the "n" word and certainly not the worst assault he has endured in his years fighting for equal rights for all Americans. That being said, he is disappointed that in the 21st century our national discourse has devolved to the point of name calling and spitting. He looks forward to taking a historic vote on health care reform legislation tomorrow, for the residents of the Fifth District of Missouri and for all Americans. He believes deeply that tomorrow's vote is, in fact, a vote for equality and to secure health care as a right for all. Our nation has a history of struggling each time we expand rights. Today's protests are no different, but the Congressman believes this is worth fighting for.

What I wrote about the Teabaggers... (0.00 / 0)
...in August applies here:

....I have to write it. These people are fucking batshit crazy. No sign of rational understanding that "death panels" are a myth. No sign of understanding that the "free market" (as pointed out by Senator McCaskill) is operating now and hasn't fixed the problems.

They have this completely irrational fear, amplified by who know what, and nothing is going to change that.

And don't get me started on our useless media. They all know that these people are batshit crazy, but they present it all as an equal opposing viewpoint.

I weep for our nation.

I saved the URL to this article by Stuart Whatly at the Huffington Post .. (0.00 / 0)
because I thought he stated the obvious so succinctly in regard to the Tea Partiers:

At its core, the Tea Party movement is rife with contradiction, incoherence and a willful contempt for facts or reason. It is but a parody of the legitimate movements for which American democracy has historically been held in such high regard. It is, in fact, the latest installment in quite another American tradition: the exploitation of frustrated, desperate, and susceptible people by monied interests and profiteers.

He sees the Tea Partiers as exemplars of an authoritarian tendency:

... authoritarians tend to rely more on emotion and instinct in decision-making, view politics in black and white, resent confusion or ambiguity in the social order, and are suspicious of specific groups who they believe could alter that order (typically gays and immigrants). The difference between authoritarians and nonauthoritarians, ... becomes far more pronounced during tumultuous economic or social periods when there are more perceived "threats." During such times, authoritarians in particular ...  "become much less interested than nonauthoritarians in seeking information that [is] balanced in its approach, and much more interested in pursuing one-sided information that reinforc[es] existing beliefs." Or in other words, they are highly susceptible to misinformation campaigns, the likes of which pervaded the health care reform debate last summer.

I agree with you that these crazies are being treated far too respectfully by the media and by our polticians. They are, as I think Blue Girl remarked earlier, the same crazies who used to retreat into the John Birch Party and various offshoots of the Klan, and who were objects of derision elsewhere - even by "respectable" conservatives. Unfortunately, they are are now emboldened by the kids-glove treatment the media is giving them and by the fact that they have managed to bring the entire Republican party to heel.

A racist posted a comment (0.00 / 0)
on the Show Me Progress YouTube site after the video of Obama's speech at St.Charles High School week before last. He titled his remark "ImperialWizardofOz" and said:

know nuthin' shit talkin' jigaboo

Should we assume that he also was ... a plant to make conservatives look bad? If I'm getting them on our site, there must be a helluva lot of those plants out there.

And the title. I'm not sure whether it indicates that he's radically irony challenged, that he doesn't know the history of the term "imperial wizard" (unlikely), or that he is consciously trying to pretend that Obama is a racist who will burn crosses on the lawns of white citizens and lynch them.

By the way, I never respond to these loonies on that site. The negative attention just encourages them.

to think that people would bother to try to smear them - or would need to - just check out pictures that are all over of some of the signs they were carrying openly yesterday (no plants there).

...has a first hand account from a staffer:

...[I]t was ugly up here today. A complete disrespect for the people and institutions. The well-reported racial slurs and attacks on Barney Frank's sexuality, but also the little things. At 9am some Tea Partiers were putting a paper placard above a Member's name outside his door that said "I am stupid" and taking a photo. I shook my head at the disrespect and after I turned the corner, yelled at my back was, "You don't agree? Then you are, too."

Or at lunch when my colleague was "boxed out" from the Coke machine by a group of Tea Partiers who used their bodies to keep him from buying a Coke.

Or when I left today and the Capitol grounds were littered w/ trash and discarded protest signs.

Unfortunately I have more stories like that, but you get the idea....

Some people should not be let out of their parents' basement.

Another Missouri legislator (0.00 / 0)
apparently contributed to the hysteria that led to someone spitting on Cleaver:

As the House was voting on an unrelated bill, Republican Reps. Tom Latham of Iowa, Jo Ann Emerson of Missouri, Brett Guthrie of Kentucky and Gregg Harper of Mississippi stood on south balcony off the House floor - an area known informally as "the beach" - holding pieces of paper that read "kill the bill" to a group of cheering protesters. Some Republican lawmakers waved a "Don't Tread on Me" flag from the balcony, causing the crowd to go wild.
