Robin Carnahan (D) in Washington, Obama in St. Louis

Sometimes the scheduling just doesn't work out. I'm not in St. Louis for President Obama's visit. I wanted to be.

This from the Kansas City Star on March 9th:

....Since she [Robin Carnahan] also has a couple of campaign fundraisers scheduled while she's in the capital, Zakula said the campaign is paying for the trip.

Still, the president is not the most popular guy in Missouri, lately. He only had a 40 percent approval rating in the state last month, according to a Rasmussen poll.

But Zakula denied that Carnahan was leaving town to avoid sharing a stage with him.

"She appreciates the support from Sen. McCaskill and the president and she's looking forward to seeing them on the campaign trail this year," he said....

"...He only had a 40 percent approval rating in the state last month, according to a Rasmussen poll..."

We never get out of junior high school.

Yes, lets take a look at Rasmussen polling:

....I want to stress that the only point I'm making in this post is that at least in national tracking polls, in any given timeframe, a Rasmussen poll is overwhelmingly likely to show better news for the GOP than any other poll.

To illustrate this point, I generated a series of scatter plot charts using pollster.com's index of polls. Every poll in pollster.com's index is represented on each chart by a dot, plotted horizontally by the date of the poll, and vertically by the results of the poll.

Rasmussen polls are in red; every other poll is in green. Shaded red areas on the charts represent areas where results would favor the GOP.

I think you'll see that Rasmussen polls literally stand out from all the others and they almost always deliver good news for the GOP....

You'd think the Kansas City Star might mention that. If they even knew or bothered to try and figure it out.

The pool report forwarded this evening by the White House Media Affairs Office:

Air force one landed at lambert-st louis international airport at 323 pm local time (423 east coast time).

No gaggle on the flight to St. Louis. But Reid Cherlin stopped by to chat, and says, on the record, that Robin Carnahan had already scheduled her trip to Washington when Potus decided to come to St. Louis. "Her people have asked if President Obama would please appear with her in a future event soon," Mr. Cherlin said. "We are working on that now."

Avoidance? Not hardly.

White House Media Affairs Office... (0.00 / 0)
...pool report of the fundraiser:

President Obama took the stage at the fundraising dinner for Claire McCaskill at the Renaissance Grand in downtown St. Louis at 6:46 local time.

Before Potus spoke, a series of Missouri Dems appeared on stage, including James [sic] Nixon: governor of Missouri, who said $1.1 billion has been awarded to to build a high speed rail between St. Louis and Chicago, which he credited to President Obama. He also said something about being able to go take the train to see the Cardinals win.

Then Claire McCaskill spoke, warning the crowd that they could eat while she talked but better not eat when Potus got on stage.

She said Potus "will go down in hisotry as one of the most courageous presidents that we have every had."

Then Potus took the stage. Highlights:

Jean Carnahan, "one of my favorite folks in Missouri."

"And all you McCaskills our there, I know you take up half the tables."

"It's nice to get out of Washington for a little bit. Now there are a lot of nice things in Washington, don't get me wrong. I love the monuments. But it's a time where most of the time people are worried more about politics than about what's right. People are hooked to the daily polls like some kind of EKG."

"Harry Truman said, Washington is a very easy city to forget where you came from and why you got there in the first place."

Of Claire McCaskill: "in a town hurt by gridlock, she's not afraid to challenge assumptions...she's a good role model for everyone, including the president of the United States."

On the stimulus: "We knew it wouldn't poll well but we had a greater responsibility: to save our country from an even greater catastrophe than the one that we'd seen. "

"We didn't know how the politics would work out, but we knew it was the right thing to do."

"As we meet tonight, there are some millions of Americans, and too many right here in this state, who are out of work. "

"Because the current health system is broken and unsustainable, we have to have health reform this year. People been talking about health care for nearly half a century. "

"Let me tell the truth about this health care debate. I know there are strong view about this....i know there are some on the other side who believe the answer is to loosen restrictions on insurance companies....that's the fox guarding the henhouse approach to health care reform."

"It's time to give the american people more control over your health care system. "

From there it was a repeat of much of what he said earlier at St. Charles High School.

He did, however, go more into the "we were sent to Washington to do what's hard" stuff that he talked about in Philadelphia on Monday.

"The reason so many of you were so passionate about this campaign wasn't so you could have a picture with me. "

"It was about recognizing ...That we don't fear the future, we seize the future. ....because somewhere down the road there were a whole bunch of people in our past, our parents and grandparents and great grandparents who decided 'we're not taking the easy path.'"

"That's what this health care debate is about, that is what my presidency is about...."

"If we stay the course..we will win in creating the kind of society that our kids and grandkids can be proud of."

Pool report corrections (0.00 / 0)
-- two corrections to pool 3 report:

The governor of Missouri is Jay, not James Nixon.

Correct Potus quote on Washingtonians on EKG should read:

"It's nice to get out of Washington for a little bit. Now there are a lot of nice things in Washington, don't get me wrong. I love the monuments. But it's a town where most of the time people are worried more about politics than about what's right. People are hooked to the daily polls like some kind of EKG."

Your pool is told that the crowd at the McCaskill dinner was 470 people. The crowd number for the grassroots event is 800, a White House official said.

You say it well: (0.00 / 0)
You'd think the Kansas City Star might mention that. If they even knew or bothered to try and figure it out.

It is hard to fight the battle of perceptions when the corporate media is so consistently either sloppy or biased in their reporting.
