The 4th of July - neighborhood fireworks

The firecrackers started going off in the street this afternoon. Before sunset there were a few impatiently set bottle rockets and one large mortar. The shrieks and whistles have escalated along with the distinct bass drum boom of mortars launching larger fireworks to greater heights. This will go on until at least midnight. Tomorrow morning we'll see the detritus all over our neighborhood streets.

At ten last night, (0.00 / 0)
as we old folk were getting ready for bed, a downpour started, and all the shrieks and booms came to a halt. How nice. I was able to go to sleep. Of course, the leftover shrieks and booms will happen tonight.

We'd hear the "boom" of the big mortars... (0.00 / 0)
...then the report, then the sound of debris hitting our house. There are cardboard remains all over my yard and driveway.

Considering who most of your neighbors are, Mike, why are you surprised about debris from bombs going off in your yard.  (Mike has a lot of neighbors who are affliated with Whiteman Air Force Base, home of the B-2 Bomber.)

Years ago I jokingly asked one of my neighbors, long since retired and moved away, if he'd take a photo of my house through the aircraft's bomb sight (I have no idea if there is one on a B-2, and he wasn't sayin') so I could put it in my annual holiday letter. He laughed.

I don't believe the neighbors firing off fireworks were B-2 pilots. They tend to to be circumspect, by the book individuals. You have to be when you're responsible for a $2.5 billion aircraft. And they don't tend to be individuals who violate local fireworks ordinances.
